From Wall Street to the National Football League (NFL), the CEO and head coach are co-laborers in an unforgiving battle to increase the bottom-line (profit and wins). Amid the tornado of overblown strategic plans and slick slide decks, CEOs can get lost in the ancillary functions that can deflate a company’s growth.

The NFL offers CEOs a unique setting to examine management strategies. Head coaches do not enjoy the luxury of waiting three months for quarterly reports. The weekly gauntlet of nationally televised games shortens the runway for strategy rollout. Results are instantly made public, and improvements must be made within 168 hours.

Roberts’ talk will take you inside the war room of the NFL and reveal actionable takeaways for your own leadership style.

As a former NFL coach, Daron will:

  • Demystify the leadership strategies of NFL coaches
  • Highlight organizational similarities between NFL teams and private companies
  • Unearth actionable takeaways for improved performance in your organization

Daron K. Roberts is a former NFL coach who serves as founding director of the Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation (CSLi) at the University of Texas. He has been featured in ESPN the Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek and Sports Illustrated. Roberts has served as a contributor to TIME, Fortune, Austin American-Statesman, Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News and Texas CEO Magazine.

Roberts focuses on issues of governance, management and innovation in the sports arena. He teaches three courses - Leadership Strategy in Sports, Disruptive Innovation in Sports and Gameplan for Winning at Life. His forthcoming book, The Ultimate Audible: How to Navigate Career Transitions, will be released in the fall of 2016.

Roberts served coaching stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, West Virginia Mountaineers and Cleveland Browns. He holds a B.A. in Plan II Honors and Government from the University of Texas (2001), an M.P.P. from Harvard's Kennedy School (2004) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (2007). Roberts was awarded the “Outstanding Young Texas Ex” award from the Texas Exes in 2011 and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government recognized Roberts as one of its “75 Most Fascinating Alumni”. The World Economic Forum pegged Roberts as a “Young Global Leader”. The Presidential Leadership Foundation – a joint venture between Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – tabbed Roberts as a Presidential Leadership Scholar for 2015. He was one of 60 members in the inaugural class.

Roberts is the founder of "4th and 1" provides free SAT prep, life skills development and football training to at-risk youth in Michigan, Texas and Florida. The camp has served nearly 500 student-athletes since 2010.
